What to Expect in Your First Yoga Class

If this is the year you are starting a yoga journey for the first time, we applaud you! We’ll be the first to lament the benefits of a consistent yoga practice. But if you’re feeling intimidated or a bit unsure of what to expect from your first class, here are a few pointers to keep in mind so you can come prepared and stay confident for practice.

1. Arrive Ahead of Time

An extra 10-15 minutes before class will allow you to check in at the front desk, get familiar with the studio, and settle into your space without feeling rushed. It’s also a great opportunity to meet the instructor and let them know if you’re new or have any specific concerns or existing injuries.

2. Dress Comfortably

Wear soft, flexible clothing that allows you to move freely. Yoga is typically done barefoot, so you won’t need special footwear. Avoid wearing anything overly baggy that might get in the way during poses – think fitted leggings or shorts paired with a breathable tank top or T-shirt.

3. Bring the Essentials

Our studio has yoga mats for rent and props available to use like blocks, straps, bolsters, and weighted blankets, but feel free to bring your own if you prefer. A water bottle and a small towel can also come in handy, especially if it’s a high-energy power class.

4. Understand the Class Format

Yoga classes vary in style, from slow and gentle practices like Yin or Slow Flow to more energetic options like Power Flow. We recommend signing up for a slower class if you’re a beginner, but don’t hesitate to ask our staff for recommendations based on your goals and fitness level.

5. Respect Yoga Etiquette

Yoga classes are meant to be calming and focused, so it’s essential to respect studio etiquette. Here are some key tips:

  • Turn off or silence your phone.

  • Avoid stepping on someone else’s mat.

  • Refrain from talking once the class begins.

6. Expect a Mix of Movements

Your instructor will guide you through a series of poses, known as asanas, and breathing exercises. Don’t worry about getting everything perfect on your first try. Yoga is a practice, not a performance, and each person’s journey is unique. Listen to your body and take breaks if needed.

7. The Role of Props

In your first class, the instructor might prompt or encourage you to use props like blocks, straps, or bolsters. These tools are designed to help you ease into poses and ensure proper alignment. Don’t be shy about using them, they’re there to support your practice.

8. Prepare for Savasana

Every yoga class ends with Savasana, or the final relaxation pose. This is your chance to lie down, breathe deeply, and absorb the benefits of yoga. It’s one of the most beloved parts of class, offering a few minutes of complete calm.

9. Stay Open-Minded

Yoga is about progress, not perfection. You might feel a little awkward during your first class, but that’s completely normal. Stay open-minded, have fun, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Over time, you’ll gain confidence and discover the many rewards of a consistent yoga practice.

10. Post-class Reflection

After class, take a moment to reflect on how you feel. Many people leave their first session feeling relaxed, energized, or a mix of both. Feel free to chat with the instructor or other students after class if you have questions or want to learn more about the studio’s offerings.

At Amador Yoga, we aim to create a welcoming, inclusive environment for everyone, whether you’re a total beginner or a seasoned yogi. We’re here to guide you every step of the way and create a supportive community where you can thrive. Roll out your mat, take a deep breath, and follow the flow!
